When will the apologies come?

When will politicians apologise for passing the dreadful Coronavirus Act and granting the government the power to lock everyone up in their own homes? When will they apologise for showing reckless disregard for the rights and the human dignity of their constituents?

When will the government architects of lockdowns apologise? When will Boris Johnson, his cabinet and the members of the SAGE committee apologise to the families of the tens of thousands of people who died preventable cancer deaths in 2020 because they were denied treatment or diagnosis by the National Health Service they pay for?

When will they apologise to the families of the many elderly people in care homes who died because government policy brought them into contact with covid patients, they were denied medical treatment or because they were issued with do not resuscitate orders without any consultation? When will they apologise to the high-risk groups who were forced to isolate themselves from their friends and family far longer than was necessary?

When will they apologise to the many business owners whose lives were wrecked by government lockdowns? When will they apologise to the millions of people who lost their jobs because of lockdowns?

When will they apologise to the women who were trapped with abusive partners for a year? When will they apologise to depression sufferers for forcing them to spend a year isolated from their friends and family?

When will they apologise to the millions of children whom they muzzled and forced to spend a year in miserable isolation from their friends? When will they apologise to the parents of those children who committed suicide because they couldn’t cope with it anymore? When will teachers apologise to children for failing to provide them with proper education for a year? When will universities apologise to students for not providing them with the education they paid for and for turning student accommodation into prisons?

When will Professor Neil Ferguson apologise for going way beyond his station as a scientist and telling the government they should adopt an extreme and unorthodox course of action, which he simply couldn’t know would save more lives than it would cost?

When will the UK’s police forces apologise for threatening and harassing innocent people for a whole year? When will they apologise for arresting people for crimes that didn’t exist? When will they apologise for breaking up weddings and church services? When will they apologise for acting like a tool of tyranny rather than the protector of people’s person and property?

When will the mainstream media apologise for consistently misleading and deliberately scaring the public throughout the pandemic? When will they apologise for accusing groups of people who went to beaches and parks of causing mass deaths?

When will middle and upper-class people who loudly condemned as uncaring scum anyone who disobeyed lockdown rules, apologise for behaving like arseholes at a time when we really needed everyone to be kind to each other? When will they apologise for selfishly forcing the burden of developing herd immunity entirely onto the shoulders of the working class, the very people who could least afford to bear it?

Only through remorse will any good come from the evil of lockdowns and only through contrition will we learn from the terrible mistakes authorities made in their reponse to the pandemic.
