When Wikipedia blocked its content for 24 hours in protest against proposed government action I was put in mind of the relationship between parent and child. Young children are often powerless in the relationship and so their only course of action can be to ‘protest’ in some self-harming manner, hoping that this elicites pity from their parents.
In a world without violent authority, of course, Wikipedia would not have had to hurt itself in an attempt to try to avoid having unwanted obligations forced upon it.
